Forensic Accounting and Investigations: 2021 review and outlook for the year ahead

Despite the pandemic, the Forensic Accounting & Investigations team continued to be busy throughout 2021 and we wanted to share some of our personal highlights from the year as well as our predictions for 2022.

A look back at 2021

2021 was the year in which the Forensic Accounting & Investigations team grew to over 20 people in the UK. We grew significantly internationally too, with specialists joining us in the Middle East, the Cayman Islands and mainland Europe. We also launched a new eDiscovery service line.

2021 was a busy year for the team and the review sets out examples of some of the matters worked on over the last year as well as the highlights of our Managing Directors over the past year.

Predictions for 2022

During 2021, we didn’t see an increase in instructions on the scale that some had predicted, particularly in relation to COVID-19. However, as detailed in the review, we expect there to be an upturn in various areas of work this year including fraud; M&A disputes; matrimonial matters; legal document reviews involving eDiscovery platforms; cross-border investigations and the recovery of stolen assets; and insolvency related forensic work. The team are also expecting to continue giving evidence under cross-examination virtually on occasions, particularly in Arbitration cases.
